Kate woke up smiling. She was ten years old today. She loved birthdays. She liked when the kids sang to her at school. She liked the special breakfast her mother always made. She loved being able to have friends over to play on her special day. Kate got dressed. She ran downstairs. She was in search of her mother's famous chocolate chip pancakes. She found a bowl of cereal and a note telling her to catch the bus to school. The day was off to a bad start. Things didn't get better at school. Her friends were too busy to play after school. The class didn't sing "Happy Birthday" to her. Her father picked her up early. But it was for a dentist appointment. There was nothing she hated more than the dentist. By the time she got home, she was crying. It was the worst birthday ever. Then she opened her front door. She heard a thunderous roar. Her entire class, even her teacher, was in the living room yelling "Surprise!"
