Thomas Edison was a great inventor. He invented many things still in use today. Edison was born in 1847. He was born in Milan, Ohio. Edison lived a long life. He died in 1931. Edison built a workshop in Menlo Park, New Jersey. This was where he made many of his inventions. Edison invented a long-lasting lightbulb. It took him a long time. It was difficult to make the lightbulb work. That was one of his greatest inventions. Edison also invented the phonograph. Phonographs play records. Records are wax discs. They can hold sound. Before cassette tapes and compact discs, records were how people listened to music at home. Edison also helped make movie cameras better. Edison was productive. His inventions made him millions of dollars. He became famous. He was known as the "The Wizard of Menlo Park." Edison worked very hard. He often only slept four hours a night.
