It was a real watch with hands that slowly moved around the white face, each hour marked with a shiny gold number. She especially loved the tiny diamond placed at the twelve mark. She knew it was only a diamond chip, but it was real. She could remember listening to the tick of her grandfather's watch when she was small enough to sit on his lap. Her watch made her feel that she was really growing up. Maria wore her watch everywhere, taking it off only to shower.
