Phillip had been on the job less than an hour when he saw his first real action. He had trained hard to become a certified lifeguard and was looking forward to a summer on the beach. During training, he had wondered several times whether he would actually get to put the techniques he was learning into practice. However, that was no longer a question. He hadn't even reached his first lunch break when he spotted a small girl being swept toward the pier. It was a windy day, and the churning surf had magnified the strong rip currents. Phillip blew his whistle loudly to alert the other lifeguards. He then sprinted into the surf, lifting his legs high to clear the incoming waves, and finally dove beneath a larger wave. When he resurfaced, he began taking powerful strokes toward the young girl.
