Gracie nervously climbed the ladder, feeling like she was leaving the world far, far behind. As she stepped out onto the edge of the high dive, she took a deep breath and looked around. Only the heads of the people in the water below were visible, and Gracie thought they looked like little beach balls bobbing back and forth in the water. She admired the bright colors of the bags and towels that dotted the edge of the pool and that were thrown beside lounge chairs. Then she heard the echoing steps of the next person climbing the ladder and knew she had to take the plunge before everyone began to stare at her and yell for her to go ahead and jump. She did not want that kind of attention, she was nervous enough as it was. So Gracie closed her eyes, pinched her nose, and stepped over the edge.
