Sammy's mom sat at the kitchen table. On the table was a big piece of paper. The piece of paper covered almost half the table. Sammy's mom was looking at the piece of paper. She looked at it very closely. Sammy walked up and stood next to his mom. He looked at the piece of paper. On the paper were a lot of lines, some black and some red. The lines were very thin. Also, there were names on the paper. The names were scattered around. Sammy recognized some names. They were towns. He had been to some of those towns. Sammy's mom told him she was looking at a map. Sammy wasn't sure what a map was, but he had heard that word before. Sammy's mom told him that a map showed them where places were and how to get to those places. Sammy's mom pointed at one of the thin, black lines on the map. She said that line was a road. By looking at the map, she could figure out how to drive to a place. It made navigating easier. Sammy asked if their town was on the map. Sammy's mom showed him that it was there.
