The International Space Station, or ISS, has orbited the earth since 1998. People have lived on the space station since November, 2000. Crews rotate through the space station. The ISS has been visited by astronauts from twelve countries. It is still being constructed. It is being built in space. Many different countries are helping to build it. The participating countries started planning the station in the early 1990s. The space station is in a low orbit. This means that it is about 220 miles over the earth. It orbits the earth about every 92 minutes. The space station gets its power from sun. It uses solar panels. Astronauts reach the ISS on either the Space Shuttle or on the Russian Soyuz spacecraft. The station is still growing. It should be finished by 2010.
