Chris asked his mother why his legs stuck to the car seat in the car. His mother didn't answer. Instead she pulled over to the side of the road. Sirens flashed in the rearview mirror. His mother mumbled something about the summer sun and vinyl. But she did not look Chris' way. Her hands shook as she fumbled through her big brown bag. It often took hours for her to find anything in her big brown bag. Then Chris' stomach leaped. A man's face appeared in his mother's window. His head was exceptionally large, bigger even than his mother's brown purse. His mother took her wallet out and handed it to him. Chris wondered why she gave the man her wallet. They had been going for ice cream. Now he feared there would be no ice cream. His eyes filled with tears. Visions of root beer floats vanished like the sun on the windshield before him.
