Did you know black bears are not always black? Black bears can be black, brown, and even white. Black bears are big creatures. Adults weigh between 90 and 500 pounds. Baby bears, or cubs, weigh only a pound when they are born. They are usually born in January or February. By September, the cubs weigh bewteen 15 and 165 pounds, depending on how much food is available. Bears eat fruit, nuts, insects, and meat. Despite their bulky bodies, both adult and baby black bears like to move around. They can swim for more than a mile. Skinny bears can run more than 30 miles per hour. During the winter, bears weigh more. This makes it so that they get hot and cannot run as far or as fast. Bears also like to rest. They take a few naps a day and sleep through the night.
