The Columbian Exposition was a World's Fair held in Chicago in 1893. It was a celebration of the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus' arrival in the New World. Chicago beat out many other large cities to host the fair. The exposition grounds were known as the White City because of the numerous white buildings constructed there. The exposition, also known as the Chicago Fair, covered 600 acres. Over 27 million people attended, and there were exhibits from 72 countries. Many important and influential events happened at the Columbian Exposition. It had an enormous effect on architecture and the arts. The first Ferris Wheel, built by George Ferris, was set up at the fair. The public was introduced to electrical power there. Electricity was used to light up one of the buildings at the fair. Only one of the more than 200 buildings from the exposition still stands in Chicago.
