This famous comet was given its name for the astronomer Edmond Halley who discovered it in 1758. Halley found that the comets that appeared in 1531, 1607, and 1682 were the same object returning every 75-76 years. The first appearance of Halley's Comet was recorded in 240 BCE by Chinese astronomers. The last sighting of Halley's Comet was in 1986.
