He knew his father would be angry when he saw the load of pink underwear and towels that Carlo was now transferring to the dryer, but there was nothing he could do about it at this point. Why hadn't someone told him that it wasn't a good idea to wash his little brother's red soccer shirt with white things? Why hadn't his mother told him when she took the job and made the laundry Carlo's responsibility? It felt as though every minute was filled with extra responsibilities, and Carlo did not think he was doing very well with them. Yesterday he had forgotten to take his mother's casserole out of the oven in time and burned dinner. This morning he had not had time to fix his little brother's lunch and had sent him to school without it. Carlo wondered how long the family could survive if he remained in charge of laundry and meals.
