The drum is an ancient musical instrument. For almost as long as humans have produced song with their voices, they have used percussion sounds for accompaniment. Early drums were often constructed by stretching animal skins over hollow logs, and many drums made today are still constructed in a similar manner. However, today drumheads may also be made of plastic or synthetic materials rather than animal hides. Another method for producing percussive rhythms involves electronics. Electronic drum kits utilize sensors beneath rubber heads. When activated, the sensors produce tones that can be electronically modified and broadcasted by an amplifier. Whether beats are produced on hi-tech drum systems or traditional drums, they continue to be the foundation of the music that brings us together.
