When Julia and Mike woke up, the ground was covered in a thick, white blanket of snow. They knew school would be cancelled. It was the first snowfall of the year. Mike was excited. Julia was nervous. Her brother had teased her all summer. He had called her a baby because she was too scared to sled down the big hill last winter. It was the steepest hill in the neighborhood. It made a sled go as fast as a car. This year she would prove to Mike that she was not a wimp. They put on their snowsuits and walked over to meet their friends. When they got to the top of the hill, Julia ran to the edge. She would be the first one down the hill this year. She sat down on her sled and yelled for everyone to watch her. She took a deep breath, closed her eyes, and pushed off.
