Sturgeons

Gulf sturgeons are giant fish that grow up to 8 feet long. Each summer, sturgeons swim from the Gulf of Mexico into the Suwannee River in northwest Florida. In late June, they begin jumping almost 6 feet out of the river. They pop up almost constantly, especially in the mornings and evenings. For years, scientists have wondered why the fish jump. Some thought they were trying to avoid danger. Others believed it was part of a mating ritual, or perhaps they were feeding. But the fish feed out in the Gulf all winter and don't eat during the summers. Finally, scientists think they have solved the mystery. They believe the fish jump to communicate with each other. They make a loud splash that can be heard for long distances. Scientists think they are letting other fish know they've found a place with deep, calm water where they can rest. They must conserve energy until they swim back to the gulf to feed again in winter.
