When the rains came again, people began to worry. After all, the last time it rained there was a lot of trouble. Creeks rose out of their banks, and the river raged out of control. Most of the town was flooded, and the surging river even washed away a bridge. Some people were stranded on the other side of the river and had to drive for miles just to get across. By the time the rain finally stopped, the destruction was very widespread. The basements of the bank, the bakery, and the dime store had nearly two feet of water in them. The barber shop wasn't flooded quite as much because it was on higher ground. Once the river settled down again, people started crossing to the other side in boats. A few of the people in town said they never wanted to go through that again. That's why everyone was so nervous when they looked outside and saw the drops starting to fall.
