In order to be a good writer, a student should organize his or her ideas. Before beginning an essay, the student should make a list of ideas. After reading back through the list, the student should decide what the main point is and what ideas support that point. The main point is called the topic sentence. Some teachers say that sentences should hold hands. That means that each sentence should relate to the one before it and the one after it. The last sentence of each paragraph should lead the reader into the next paragraph. If the student uses clear language, the reader will better understand the writer's point. After writing and revising, each paragraph should be reviewed for errors in grammar or logic. A well-organized essay will not only hold the reader's attention, but teach them something, too.
