Ladybugs are a type of beetle. There are more than 5,000 species of ladybugs in the world. Each species has its own unique pattern of spots. Ladybugs are usually red with black spots or black with red spots. Although they come in many sizes, most ladybugs are less than one quarter of an inch long. Females are slightly larger than males. Ladybugs have wings, and like all insects, they each have a head, abdomen, and thorax. Ladybugs smell, touch, and taste with their antennae. Also called lady beetles and ladybirds, ladybugs live in many different habitats. They are most welcome in gardens or farmers' fields because ladybugs feed on aphids, a pest that eats plants and crops. In fact, ladybugs were even sent into space in 1999 to see if they could eat aphids in zero gravity. And they did! During its six to eight week life, a ladybug can eat 5,000 aphids. No wonder ladybugs are believed to bring good luck.
