It was the Saturday before my birthday. My father asked me to help him run some errands. He promised to buy me a popsicle, so I went. First we visited the hardware store. My father took forever to buy a box of nails. He asked the hardware man lots of questions. Then we went to the library. My father wandered through the stacks of books, humming. For a long time he tried to decide between books about Abraham Lincoln and Teddy Roosevelt. Pulling on his arm I dragged him to the checkout desk. Then we went to a convenience store to get a popsicle. While we were there, Dad filled the gas tank. He washed the windows. He checked the tire pressure. I finally shouted for us to go. He laughed. Finally we went home. When I walked in the door, all my friends jumped out and hollered "surprise!" I looked at my tricky father, and he just grinned.
