In America, people fought each other in the the Civil War. There were two sides in the war. One side was the Union, and the other side was the Confederacy. The first battle took place in 1861 in April. It was at Fort Sumter in South Carolina. South Carolina was with the Confederacy. There were soldier inside the fort who were with the Union. They flew the Union flag on top of the fort. This made people in the Confederacy mad. The Confederates wanted the Union soldiers to take down the flag, but the soldiers did not take it down. The Confederacy sent soldiers to stand around the fort. Someone shot a gun at the fort, which started a battle. The two sides began to fight. They fought for two days, but no one died in the fight. The Confederacy won, and the Union soldiers left the fort.
