There are many different kinds of poetry. Some poetry rhymes and some doesn't. Some poetry that rhymes does it in unusual ways. Rhyme is the word we use to describe what happens when two different words have similar sounds. For example "pound" and "round" are words that rhyme. In poetry rhyme can occur at the end, in the middle, or even at the beginning of a line. There are many different patterns of rhyme found in poetry. The pattern that consists of two lines with the same rhyme is called a rhyming couplet. Here's an example of a rhyming couplet you have probably heard: "Hickory, dickory, dock, / the mouse ran up the clock." In this example you can see two places where rhyme occurs. "Hickory" rhymes with "dickory," and the words at the end of each line also rhyme with one another. Can you think of other verses that have more than one rhyme in a couplet?
