Dubai is part of the United Arab Emirates, a country located on the Persian Gulf near Saudi Arabia. Though it is situated in a region of the world rich in oil reserves, Dubai generates most of its income through trade and tourism. In recent years Dubai has undertaken enormous construction and development projects aimed at luring wealthy individuals to the area for living, shopping, and tourism. One of those developments is called Palm Islands. Located just off the coast of Dubai, Palm Islands is a series of three man-made archipelagos that, when completed, will take the shape of massive palm trees. To build the islands, millions of tons of sand will be dredged up from the sea floor, and divers will hand-position thousands of rocks. When they are finished, the Palm Island developments will feature residences, hotels, and shopping centers and will be the largest man-made islands on Earth.
