Jan leaned back into her airplane seat. Her forehead was sweaty. Though the plane hadn't taken off, she couldn't look out of the window. For the third time, she checked that her seat belt was buckled. It still was. She pulled it snug around her waist. Taking a deep breath, she looked around at the other passengers. Some were still filing onto the plane. The aisle was filled with people waiting to walk to their seats farther back. As the line moved, an elderly man took the seat next to Jan. He smiled at her. He fiddled unsuccessfully with his seat belt. His hands were shaking. He couldn't get the buckle to latch. Jan offered to help him. She showed him how the buckle worked. Once he clicked it together, she told him how to tighten it. He smiled again. "Thank you. Flying makes me nervous," he said.
